Darrell is a South Dakota native and grew up in Madison and Hartford, South Dakota. He completed undergraduate studies in accounting at the University of South Dakota in 1985 and went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota, School of Law in 1988.

Darrell joined the firm in 1994 and prior to that, served as Director of Loan Origination/Legal Counsel for the South Dakota Governors Office of Economic Development. In 2007 he retired from the South Dakota Air National Guard as a Colonel after a 26 year career and 12 years as a Staff Judge Advocate (JAG). Darrell also worked for three years as a tax consultant for Deloitte & Touche in Minneapolis.

Darrell was admitted to practice law in South Dakota in 1989 and in the state of Iowa in 1995. He is a member of the South Dakota State Bar Association and the Iowa State Bar Association. He is also a member of the Business Law Committee and the Municipal Attorney's Association of the South Dakota Bar. Darrell's general practice includes, but is not limited to, corporation, business, estate planning, municipal, real estate, wills and probate law.

Darrell is a board member of the Dakota Valley Business Council, a member of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a member of the North Sioux City Lions Club, American Legion and McCook Lake Izaak Walton League. He was also a member of the finance committee at Sacred Heart Church for six years. He enjoys softball and golf when not spending time with his wife, Deb and their three children.
