Stew is a third generation Sioux Cityan. He graduated in 1965 from the University of Iowa Law School after receiving his undergraduate degree from the same institution in 1963. Also a graduate of the Wentworth Military Academy, Stew served on active duty with the United States Army from 1965-1967. He joined the firm in 1967. He served as a part-time Assistant City Attorney from 1967-1971.

Stew was admitted to practice law in Iowa in 1965, in Nebraska in 1983 and in South Dakota in 2004. His general practice includes, but is not limited to, corporation, business law, real estate and estate planning. Stew is a current member of the American Bar Association (Section of Business Law) and the Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota State Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Woodbury County Bar Association and served as president in 1996. Stew is a past member of the Board of Governor's of the Iowa State Bar Association and is currently active with Iowa State Bar Committees for business practice.

Stew enjoys hunting, fishing and other aquatic sports. He has served on various city and county boards and commissions and is a past president of the Siouxland Area Red Cross, Easter Seal Society of Siouxland, Woodbury County Civil Service Commission and the Sioux City Transit Board.

Stew's wife, Maureen, is a practicing nurse in Sioux City. His three sons are Peter, a venture capitalist with the Whitecap Venture Fund in Austin, Texas, Steven, an attorney with the Johnson Law Firm in Yankton, South Dakota and Allen, a doctor of chiropractic with Precision Spinal Care in Fort Collins, Colorado.
